In an eggshell...
- Apricity was a UK-based virtual clinic that ceased operations starting January 2025
- Patients were informed via email of the closure- but many were left doubting of the next steps
- We've outlined some options- and how Amilis can help
Apricity, a UK-based virtual clinic, ceased all operations on January 1, 2025, due to sudden and irreversible financial difficulties.
This closure came across as a shock to many, given their series B funding in September 2022 and their acquisition of the Spanish period tracking app Woom as a part of their expansion strategy.
But this was a bigger shock and a hurdle for hundreds of families and people across the UK looking to preserve their fertility or start their family.
If you’re someone affected by the closure, waiting on a refund or are just wondering about the next steps- here’s how Amilis can help.
Why Did Apricity Clinics Close?
Apricity had a remote approach where they offered online consultations, at-home fertility tests and offered egg and sperm freezing via their partner clinics.
But as a remote clinic, this was not regulated by the HFEA (Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority), which oversees physical clinics.
Before closing in January, they released an email on December 20th stating that patients who have paid will be able to continue their treatment at a partner clinic, and if not, they will be issued a refund.
How Does The Apricity Closure Affect Patients?
While the clinic had sent out emails announcing the closure, any replies to the email sent back an automated response, leaving patients clueless.
So patients who were either starting or in between a treatment cycle were faced with these choices:
- Either continue the treatment at partner clinics
- Choose not to, and accept the refund
And if patients had reached out to Apricity via a fertility payment plan provider or insurer, then they had to reach out to the latter, rather than the clinic, regarding the refund.
And for patients who had already completed their cycle, they were recommended to contact the partner clinics to ensure ongoing egg/sperm or embryo storage.
Not only is this an additional emotional, physical and financial toll, but it also served as a barrier for patients, leaving them wondering about the next steps.
How Amilis Can Help
First things first. We want to acknowledge how hard it is to navigate this. Going through an egg freezing cycle is demanding enough, and situations like these can be a hurdle, to say the least.
It’s also saddening to see a fertility clinic close, the doctors, embryologists and nurses affected, and the disruption of a service that made fertility care accessible.
